Winter Park Elementary School
From The Winter Park Herald, August 18, 1939.

In 1916 a new $30,000 grade and high school building was erected at the southeast corner of Park Avenue, South, and Lyman Avenue. Bonfoy & Elliott of Tampa were architects for the building, which had two stories, 10 classrooms, a basement, and auditorium.  Size of the original lot was 250 X 368 feet. The location of the building made it necessary to close part of Chapman Avenue, which originally ran from Rollins College to Lyman Avenue.  Hanner Brothers of Orlando was contractor for the school.  The town gave the old school and lot to the school district to sell and to apply on purchase of the new lot and equipment for the new building.  The new school was scheduled to be completed in December of 1916.

The Elementary school opened in January of 1917 with eleven grades, eight teachers, and 150 students.  A twelfth grade was to be added when required.  Professor J. M. Okerlund was Principal. Rollins College accepted eleventh and twelfth grade pupils at the Academy, without charging for tuition. Mrs. Dudley Mathews opened a model kindergarten in the public school building.

In 1919 there were 160 students in the public school.  About 25 members of the 11th and 12th grades were at Rollins College because of the lack of equipment in the public school.  In the meantime Rollins cut out all sub-preparatory work below the 11th grade and sent the applicants to the public school.

In 1922 the second half of the Elementary School was built at a cost of $21,000. In 1927 (fall) the PTA began serving cafeteria meals at the elementary school.  Mrs. J. D. Bowen, PTA president, was in charge. In September of 1927 Mrs. E. P. Hill became the principal of the Elementary School.

Ernest Cason resigned as Principal of the Elementary School in August of 1939, and was succeeded by Nelson Glass, who was the former assistant under Cason, and had taught for six years in the 5th and 6th grades. Glass had a B.S. from the University of Florida and M.A. from Stetson University. Cason went to FSU in Tallahassee. William Rice of Eustis took over Glass's position.

The playground was completed at the W.P. Elementary School on Park Avenue in April of 1935.  About $1,500 was appropriaed from FERA funds to pay for the labor. The school board underwrote the trucking, and the clay was secured at a small cost.  The diamond ball courts were made on the Comstock Avenue side of the school, volleyball and rope-jumping on the Lyman Avenue side.  The equipment was given through benefits given by the Parent Teachers Association. One at the Arthur Harris home netted $90.
